چکیده

In this paper, we consider the novel concept of a Radio Frequency (RF) controllable microvalve for di erent medical applications. Wireless communication via a Surface Acoustic Wave Identi cation-mark (SAW ID-tag) is used to control, drive and locate the microvalve inside the human body. The energy required for these functions is provided by RF pulses, which are transmitted to the valve and back by a reader/transmitter system outside of the body. These RF bursts are converted into Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs), which propagate along the piezoelectric actuator material of the microvalve. These waves cause de ections, which are employed to open and close the microvalve. We identi ed ve important areas of application of the microvalve in biomedicine: 1) fertility control; 2) arti cial venous valves; 3) ow cytometry; 4) drug delivery and 5) DNA mapping.

Improving the Security and Actuation of Wireless Controlled Microvalve

A wireless microvalve would have a wide range of applications, including biomedical applications such as fertility control and nano-litre drug delivery. Arguably the most important aspect for such a device is a secure method to actuate the valve, such that it is not actuated through the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation already present in the surrounding environment. Additionally, many of t...

Droplet on demand system utilizing a computer controlled microvalve integrated into a stiff polymeric microfluidic device.

An integrated microvalve fabricated in a stiff polymeric (polycarbonate) device allows for formation of droplets and bubbles of arbitrary volumes and at arbitrary times of emission. Predesigned protocols of formation of sequences of volumes, intervals between the droplets and their chemical compositions can be practically and reproducibly realised and controlled from a personal computer. The de...

On-demand Control of Microfluidic Flow via Solenoid Microvalve Suction

A simple, low-cost and on-demand microfluidic controlling platform was developed based on a capillary-tuned solenoid microvalve suction effect without any outer pressure source. The suction effect was employed as a stable driving force for manipulating micro-fluid by connecting a piece of capillary tubing between the microvalve and the chip. The suction volume could be controlled from microlite...

Measurement of cell migration in response to an evolving radial chemokine gradient triggered by a microvalve.

We describe a novel chemotaxis assay based on the microvalve-actuated release of a chemoattractant from a cell-free microchamber into a cell-containing microchamber. The microvalve chemotaxis device (microVCD) was placed on the stage of a conventional inverted microscope to obtain time-lapse micrographs of neutrophils migrating in a radially-symmetric evolving gradient of the chemotactic factor...
